A commentary on children’s stories twenty years later
Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water;
Jack fell down and broke his crown, (Broke his crown, really?)
And Jill came tumbling after.
Pat a cake, pat a cake, Bakers man! (Drew: “I always thought it was ‘Patty cake’.”)
Bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Roll it, and pat it, and make it with B,
Put it in the oven for Baby and me.
Hush a bye Baby
On the Tree Top,
When the wind blows
The cradle will rock;
When the Bough breaks
The Cradle will fall,
And down will come Baby,
Cradle and all. (This one has always bothered me: how do you accurately illustrate?)We understand that some of them may have originated as political parodies, but why are we still repeating them to children?
